MARTICA S. DOUGLAS began her practice as a trial attorney in 1977, when it was unusual to see women as trial counsel in Maine’s courtrooms, and she has been putting her faith in Maine juries ever since. She maintains a broad-based civil litigation practice that includes representing both plaintiffs and defendants in personal injury, toxic exposure, professional malpractice, and insurance coverage cases. Martica also represents family law litigants and offers her services as a mediator in divorce cases.
Martica graduated with honors from Barnard College in 1973 and obtained her law degree from the University of Maine School of Law in 1977. She has represented clients in well over a hundred jury trials, and is regarded by her colleagues as among the most experienced and effective trial lawyers in Maine. She is zealous in pursuing justice for her clients. She fully explores opportunities to resolve disputes through negotiation, but when a just resolution is not attainable, Martica will not hesitate to fight for justice in court. She has confidence in the ability of Maine juries to be guided by common-sense in arriving at fair and just verdicts. She was recently elected to be a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates.
Martica’s courtroom experience has been wide-ranging. She and partner Deb Buccina obtained the highest award ever returned by a Maine jury in a “slip and fall” case. She has obtained a punitive damages award for a victim of mortgage fraud, and verdicts for landlords in cases alleging both carbon monoxide exposure and lead poisoning. She has represented plaintiffs in medical malpractice cases and defended insurance agencies in cases alleging professional negligence. She is an expert in the area of insurance coverage. Over the years, Martica has argued more than 50 cases before the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, and her name is associated with a number of landmark decisions that are now an established part of Maine jurisprudence.
Martica enjoys living and working in Portland. She has lived on Portland’s beloved Munjoy Hill for 30 years, and walks or bikes to the office whenever time and weather permit. She has two children, Tica and Will, who are her pride and joy.
